Modest Monumentality

A 1,543 SF single-family residence in Morrison, CO designed for Graduate Studio 4, applying classical principles of symmetry, procession, and proportion at a domestic scale.

Design Studio 4 · M.Arch, University of Colorado Denver · 1,543 SF · Morrison, CO

The design centers on a rotunda capped by an octagonal cupola and square widow’s walk, which brings natural light down into the heart of the plan. Wings extend from the rotunda to accommodate dining and kitchen on one side and a great room on the other, while a rear wing contains the primary suite and a guest bedroom. A formal parterre garden extends the building’s axis into the landscape.

Proportional analysis — including golden ratio studies applied to the elevation and plan — governed the sizing and placement of structural bays, windows, and classical details. Column capital studies and trim details were developed at large scale, demonstrating close engagement with the classical orders. Produced in AutoCAD, Revit, Twinmotion, and Photoshop.
